Imprints are made on us in childhood. They are psychically tattooed upon the deepest strata of our being.
If we grew up in a home that made us feel safe and happy where coffee was brewed each morning chances are we have a positive imprint of that aroma. If, however, our first recollection of coffee was associated with a negative memory we recoil when we encounter it.
This is the way it goes for all smells, sounds, sights, tastes and things we touch. We have an imprint that stays with us for the entirety of our lives unless we consciously choose to change it.
Some of the greatest damage done is with words. Children especially absorb like sponges what is said to them. As a result many grow up bound with psychic restraints. Admonishments such as, “you could never play the piano like that,” often stop a promising student in their tracks. I’ve actually heard a parent say to a child, “rich people are different from us.” While they may have had a well-meaning intention by uttering those words, a psychological limit was registered by the child.
We must be thoughtful and careful with our words, especially to children. Undoing the damage to untether one’s highest potential is not easy but it can be done.
Removing a bedrock belief takes conscious action and determination. Yet once it’s dissolved your psyche feels a thousand pounds lighter and you can see from a fifty thousand foot vantage point. I know this from personal experience.
Letting an ancient, false belief crumble under your feet frees you to see who you authentically are. What you see may shock you or it may be what you’ve always felt intuitively to be true.
