Cutting the Cord

I’m always thrilled when people share their extraordinary experiences with me. And oh boy, this is a great one I couldn’t wait to share with you.

A friend of mine fell quickly and madly in love with a guy. Their brief but passionate time together ended abruptly but she carried that dreaded love torch for him for months, and months. On a long-planned trip to Bali for a yoga retreat, she participated in a ceremony called ‘cord cutting.’

If you’re not familiar with this, it’s a ceremony where you symbolically cut ties with someone or something. The goal is to energetically unbind yourself, letting go of emotional pain and grief. I’ve known about the practice for a long time and actually participated in a couple.

So, my friend does the cord-cutting ceremony with this guy in mind. She really wanted to move on in her life and stop thinking about him, and stop hoping he would have a change of heart and come back to her.

A few days after the ceremony, she’s taking several long flights home. The entire way, she’s second-guessing herself. Should I have done that? What if he was just about to come back to me, and I ruined it with the cord cutting? She was miserable and very confused.

A red-eye flight from Los Angeles to Austin was the final leg of her trip. She was exhausted; physically, mentally and emotionally. Sliding into her seat on the plane, she pulled her cap over her eyes and fell asleep. When she awoke, the flight had landed. She stood up to move to the aisle to exit and noticed that sitting directly behind her… was the guy.

Not only was it the man she had been so crazy in love with, but so was the new woman in his life.

He avoided eye contact with her, but she told me that in that moment, not only was she sure the cord cutting had worked (because she was no longer feeling the intense emotions for him), But she knew the Universe (or whatever outrageously fabulous word you want to call it), had validated that she was correct in doing it.

She was free!
